Big Idea: We fall out of love with money as we grow in love with Christ.
Application: We don't fall out of love with money by trying to convince ourselves it's worthless. It's by seeing that Jesus is infinitely more valuable. So we must cultivate a greater love for God. This week I invite you back into the practice of Solitude.
- Set aside 15–20 minutes to be alone with God.
- Find a quiet place.
- Read 1 John 2:15-17 several times.
- Spend time in reflection.
- Ask questions that come to the surface about what you love.
- What has been occupying my thoughts the most lately?
- What am I spending the most time, energy, and attention pursuing?
- What do I believe I need to finally feel secure, significant, or satisfied?
- Where do I see the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, or the pride of life showing up in my own heart?
- Is there a lesser love that has slowly begun competing with my love for Christ?
- Don’t move on too quickly, but sit with Jesus.
- Sit and invite the Holy Spirit to reveal what you love and why.
End with prayer.
"Jesus, thank You for loving me first.
You know my heart better than I know myself.
Show me where my loves have become disordered.
Reveal the places where I have looked to money, comfort, success, or anything else to give me what only You can provide. Forgive me for trusting temporary things more than Your eternal promises.
By Your Spirit, reshape my desires.
Help me to love You more than my possessions, Your presence more than my comfort, and Your Kingdom more than my own plans.
Become the greatest treasure of my heart. Amen."
